LAS VEGAS, Nev. – So, about all that criticism about the Mountain West tournament being cut to an eight-team format next year?
Not so fast.
It appears the tournament, in all its 11-team glory for both the men and the women, will be remaining intact after all.
The Journal has learned from several sources that university presidents around the conference are expected to reverse course this Friday at a previously scheduled board of directors meeting. They are to rethink their controversial December decision to cut the basketball tourney format from all 11 league members to just eight, eliminating six teams – three men’s, three women’s – from the annual event played each March in the Thomas & Mack Center.
