They couldn’t control the 8:10 p.m. starting time, but the University of New Mexico Lobos had themselves to blame for a late night of work Friday.
UNM led nearly all the way in its 65-57 women’s basketball win over Houston Baptist, but poor free-throw shooting and some shaky second-half play made the season opener harder than it had to be for the home team.
The Lobos led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter but failed to put the Huskies away. Icy foul shooting (17-of-33) was a major culprit, as were 19 turnovers and several missed layups in the second half.
