ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — January was not a month Alexa Chavez will care to remember but February is off to a promising start.
Chavez, a senior forward for the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team, walked away smiling Monday after her first full practice of 2016. Chavez suffered a tendon injury in her right leg during the Lobos’ 51-47 win at Nevada on Dec. 30 and has missed her team’s last seven games.
“I surprised myself a little today,” Chavez said, “and I’m so excited. I have to take it one step at a time, but this was a big step.
