The ambitious plan for the 0-2 New Mexico and 0-1 New Mexico State women to play soccer Wednesday at Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces came up short, and the rivals will battle at the NMSU complex instead.
The short story: Aggie Memorial’s soccer dimensions are smaller than the NCAA minimum of 70 by 115 yards. NMSU played there anyway for the program’s first three years (2009-11) with an NCAA waiver. But conversion since then from natural to artificial turf at AMS has eaten up even more square yardage, with the concrete ring of its structure creeping closer to the boundaries of play.
