ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Leaving so soon, guys? It seems you just got here.
Saturday night, defensive end Chris Lee and wide receiver Carlos Wiggins will play the final regular-season game of their college football careers. Their combined six years in the University of New Mexico program could have been eight, had things worked out differently.
But their talents were needed right away, and they never got the redshirt year that coaches value so highly as the building blocks of success.
“It has gone real fast,” said Lee, a junior college transfer who came to UNM with a redshirt year available but was thrown into the mix immediately.
