Lobos’ offense awakens in decisive win over Aztecs

SAN DIEGO – The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team rediscovered its scoring touch and gained a little payback with a decisive 64-45 win over San Diego State on Tuesday night.

Cherise Beynon scored a game-high 20 points and four 3-pointers to help the Lobos (15-13, 8-9 Mountain West) dominate the Aztecs (11-16, 6-11) at Viejas Arena. SDSU won the teams’ first meeting, 51-46, last month in the Pit.

The rematch was all New Mexico. Beynon and Bryce Owens hit early 3s as UNM opened on an 8-0 run and led wire to wire.

Khadijah Shumpert added 15 points, the Lobos’ bench outscored SDSU’s 18-7, and the visitors led by as many as 24 points in the second half.
