Lobo softball gets rare win over ranked team

Emmalyn Brinka tossed five shutout innings, and the University of New Mexico softball team Saturday defeated 19th-ranked Oregon State 8-0 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

It is the program’s first victory over a ranked team in seven years.

Junior Maddie Boldt was 2-for-3, with a double and three RBIs to lead the UNM offense. Olivia Birkinshaw had just one hit for the Lobos, but it was a pinch-hit, three-RBI double to make it 8-0.

Brinka walked two and struck out four in her appearance, and surrendered just two hits.

Oregon State had beaten the Lobos 2-0 on Friday.
