ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Four games into the season and one thing is clear: The UNM Lobos have the makings for one of the best starting frontcourts in the Mountain West Conference.
The problem is that just 10 days into the season it’s also apparent that starters are about it for the Lobos in terms of big men.
Yes, power forward Tim Williams is averaging 18.0 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and shooting 65.7 percent from the floor. But he also played 37 minutes, including all 20 in the second half, of Saturday’s loss at USC.
And while he had a stellar stat line of 25 points and 15 rebounds (nine of which were offensive boards), UNM coach Craig Neal said the team needs to be wiser about how it utilizes the 6-foot-8 transfer from Samford.
