Ex-UNM coach Sanchez says race not a factor in her firing

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico fired women’s basketball coach Yvonne Sanchez last week after five seasons, touching off accusations of racism by UNM’s administration.

In a statement released to the media late Saturday night, Sanchez addressed those allegations. Here is her statement.

“As we all know, (Friday), I was released from my contract as the Lady Lobos Head Basketball Coach for the University of New Mexico. I have received inquiries from numerous organizations questioning the motivation of The University and the Director of Athletics, Paul Krebs related to these recent actions.

I do not agree with my release, the reasons supporting it nor the manner in which my release was conducted.
