The ongoing state-wide and University budget crisis has begun to affect the UNM Athletics Department, which announced Thursday that it will be cutting the men's and women's skiing programs to relieve its budget, which has been running at a deficit for years.
According to an Athletics Department news release, the cuts will save UNM about $600,000 a year.
"The University of New Mexico, as well as our entire state, is in very tough and challenging economic times," Athletics Director Paul Krebs said in a statement. "This is truly a last resort for us. Taking away opportunities from our student athletes is never good.
