A Journal story last week dealt with some past blowout University of New Mexico victories that turned out to be meaningless by season’s end.
To that list, in light of the Lobos’ 40-21 loss to Tulsa on Saturday, it seems fair to add the Lobos’ 66-0 rout of Mississippi Valley State the previous week. Meaningless now, to be sure, except for that “1” in the win column. No, they can’t take that away.
But UNM’s football history also includes some seemingly disastrous losses that turned out to be not so terrible after all.
There was that 16-0 loss to Utah in the 1964 season opener; those Lobos went 9-2 and shared a Western Athletic Conference title.
