ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In one of its most heartbreaking finishes yet, the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team lost 59-58 at San Jose State on a bizarre buzzer-beating play.
The Spartans’ Riana Byrd scored on a layup, the ball hanging momentarily on the rim as the final horn sounded, for the game winner after an inbounds play with just 2.7 seconds remaining.
The Lobos’ Laneah Bryan hit one free throw to give the Lobos a 58-57 lead, then missed the second to give San Jose State its final possession.
“Khadijah (Shumpert) did a great job on the ball, and Jaisa (Nunn) had it in her hands,” Lobos coach Yvonne Sanchez told the Journal in a postgame phone interview.
