The Devils recalled goalie Ken Appleby from Binghamton in the AHL on an emergency basis after Cory Schneider missed the main portion of Friday's practice due to illness.
The Devils are using one of their two emergency goalie exemptions for the season, so they don't need to make a corresponding roster move to open up a spot for Appleby.
Schneider traveled with the team to Philadelphia for the team's 1 p.m. game on Saturday against the Flyers.
With Appleby recalled, it appears he will serve as backup to Keith Kinkaid, who was previously named Saturday's starter.
