Lamoriello hands power to Ray Shero in Devils stunner

Ray Shero has been hired as general manager of the Devils, the team announced during a bombshell conference call on Monday.

Shero will report to Lou Lamoriello, who will stay on as team president. He will become just the fourth GM in franchise history after Lamoriello had held the job since 1987.

The 52-year-old Shero served as GM of the Penguins from 2006-2014. The Penguins won the Stanley Cup in 2009.

Lamoriello said Shero will oversee the hiring on the team’s next coach. The Devils have missed the playoffs for three consecutive seasons. Adam Oates and Scott Stevens shared coaching duties with Lamoriello at the end of last season following the ouster of Pete DeBoer.
