PHILADELPHIA -- Kevin Rooney was one of the final players in contention to make the Devils out of training camp.
He didn't, but five games into the season, Rooney will join the team Saturday and will center the fourth line, called up from Binghamton after Travis Zajac was ruled out with a lower body injury from Thursday's 5-3 loss to the Colorado Avalanche at Prudential Center.
Rooney will fill a big void on special teams in his season debut against the Flyers.
"Kevin was really close to making the team," Devils coach John Hynes said Saturday morning at Wells Fargo Center.
