The Devils, without a true coach since team president Lou Lamoriello fired Pete DeBoer in late December and took the reins himself, along with Scott Stevens and Adam Oates, are expected to fill that vacancy Tuesday when John Hynes is introduced as the team’s new coach at a noon press conference.
Hynes, 40, had been the coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for the past five seasons, compiling a 231-126-27 record and making the playoffs every season. Twice his teams, which stress defense, lost in the conference finals.
This past season the Baby Pens gave up the fewest goals in the AHL but also showed the ability to score and finished the season with a goals differential of plus-49.
