Devils drub woeful Red Wings in battle of cellar dwellers

Will Butcher scored the go-ahead goal in the third period, and the New Jersey Devils beat the Red Wings 5-1 on Saturday night at Prudential Center, handing Detroit its fifth straight loss.

Blake Coleman scored two goals for the Devils, who had dropped two in a row. Kyle Palmieri and Taylor Hall also scored, and Louis Domingue made 19 saves.

Taro Hirose scored for the Red Wings, and Jonathan Bernier made 29 saves.

The game featured the two worst teams in the Eastern Conference. Both had only seven wins coming in. New Jersey started the night in 15th place with 18 points, one more than Detroit.
