It was a rather tame quarterfinals match between surprise Group A winners Peru and Group B runner up Colombia. The two sides combined to have only one shot on target each, with the best chance of the match coming from James Rodriguez's effort going off the crossbar midway through the first half.
But with Copa America rules foregoing extra time and heading straight to penalties in the first two rounds of the knockout stages, Colombia was ruthless, netting all four of the penalties through Rodriguez, Juan Cuadrado, Dayro Moreno and Sebastian Perez.
In the third round, after Moreno converted his penalty to put Columbia up 3-2 in the shootout, Miguel Trauco stepped up for Peru.
