Woodside native Julian Edelman retires after underdog NFL career

Wide receiver Julian Edelman retired from the NFL on Monday, having lived the ultimate underdog story. From Woodside High, he went to junior college in San Mateo, succeeded at Kent State as an undersized college quarterback, and then became a favorite option on three Super Bowl-winning Patriots teams.

Citing a knee injury that cut his 2020 season short, Edelman retired at age 34 after 11 seasons.

“Nothing in my career has ever come easy. And, no surprise, this isn’t going to come easy either,” Edelman said fighting back tears in a video posted to Twitter. “I’ve always said I’m going to go until the wheels come off.
