FOXBORO — On one of the few balls thrown his way in competitive drills during yesterday’s mandatory minicamp practice on the fields behind Gillette Stadium, Andrew Hawkins leapt for a high pass from quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
Hawkins, a 5-foot-7 wide receiver, made an attempt to bring the ball down, but it bounced off his fingertips for an incompletion.
If he was a few inches taller, maybe he makes the catch. But he was just short and spent a few minutes after practice getting extra reps on catching balls on the wet, cold day.
For someone who signed as a free agent on a roster that already has a stacked depth chart at his position, Hawkins has an uphill climb to make the team.
