The Patriots have announced the release of veteran linebacker Shea McClellin. It was with a failed physical designation.
McClellin, who was signed in 2016, did not play at all last season, as he was on injured reserve from the outset. He suffered two concussions during the year, and it’s not clear if concussions were part of the failed physical. McClellin, who appeared in 14 regular season games in 2016, does have hopes of playing this season.
By cutting him, the Patriots save $2.35 million against the cap. A possible alternative might be Jonathan Casillas, who was in Foxboro for a visit Thursday.
