Patriots notebook: Deshaun Watson’s running ability no surprise to Devin McCourty, defense

FOXBORO — The element of surprise really won’t fly as an excuse if Deshaun Watson makes a big play against the Patriots on Sunday.

According to safety Devin McCourty, the Patriots know what they’re getting into with the Houston Texans and their rookie quarterback. After all, the teams practiced together in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., leading up to the second preseason game, and Watson has nearly a game and a half of film of regular-season play available.

While Watson still has a ways to go in terms of mastering the offense — like any rookie would at this stage — and fine-tuning his accuracy, the one element that has already carried over from his days at Clemson is his ability to improvise and make plays with his feet.
