Patriots cut Cody Kessler as frontrunner to replace Tom Brady emerges

The New England Patriots don’t appear to be in a rush to add to their list of potential replacements for departed franchise quarterback Tom Brady.

The Pats ”have expressed no interest” in signing free agent Cam Newton or trading for Cincinnati’s Andy Dalton since Brady signed earlier this month with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to the Athletic. They also would need to create significant cap space to facilitate either transaction, with presently only $2.8 million available, the second-lowest total in the league.

As of now, the Patriots’ depth chart at quarterback consists of second-year player Jarrett Stidham and journeyman Brian Hoyer after they released third-stringer Cody Kessler on Wednesday.
