Former Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler pleaded no contest to a reckless driving charge stemming from a March arrest in Providence, Rhode Island according to WJAR.

Butler was initially charged with driving under the influence, but the charge was reduced to reckless driving. His license was suspended for 40 days.

A police report alleges that Butler smelled strongly of alcohol and showed signs of blurred speech, WJAR reports.

Butler’s attorney, former R.I. House Speaker John Harwood, attempted to get the charge dismissed, but Butler ultimately pled to the lesser charge.

“I think when they stopped him he wasn’t driving,” Harwood told WPRI.
