New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo officially announced his decision to start Jacoby Brissett at quarterback on Thursday.

The move will leave rookie Drake Maye on the bench to start the season, despite Mayo saying he “outplayed” the veteran throughout the preseason.

“I wouldn’t say disappointed,” Maye said at his locker shortly after. “There’s two ways to look at it. Obviously I want to play, the competitive edge in me. But at the same time, understanding the situation just coming in here. Jacoby’s been in the offense and gotten the reps with the ones all camp.
