Devin McCourty, Brian Belichick pick which WR they’d poach to play emergency safety

The New England Patriots ran into a familiar (albeit wild) scenario in their preseason finale: a receiver playing defense.

This time around, it was former Patriots receiver Isaiah Zuber winding up at safety in the closing minutes of the game, picking off rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe.

It’s also something the Patriots have tried out a few times over in recent years, with Troy Brown, Julian Edelman and Matthew Slater all having stints at defensive back.

Fortunately for New England, the defense hasn’t been in so dire a scenario that they’ve had a player play both ways for over a decade.
