Cam Newton says he’s playing for respect in 2020

Even if Cam Newton earns every cent in his incentive-laden contract with the New England Patriots, his $7.5 million payday still will rank in the lower quarter among starting NFL quarterbacks’ compensation for the 2020 season.

The details of Newton’s new contract brought a rush of news stories noting not only the unfavorably monetary comparison to other quarterbacks in 2020 but also his base salary for the season at the veteran’s minimum of $1.05 million and the Patriots’ comparatively paltry obligation of $550,000 if things don’t work out.

The former Auburn All-American wrote on his Instagram account on Thursday that he had a larger goal than his paycheck in the 2020 season: “It’s not a lot of things money cannot buy, but amongst the top of that list of things you would find respect as one of those!
