Wolf Pack ends 2017 fiscal year with $2 million deficit

In 2015 and 2016, the Nevada Wolf Pack athletic department posted back-to-back fiscal year surpluses for the first time in more than a decade, but the final numbers for fiscal year 2017 weren’t nearly as favorable.

Wolf Pack athletic direction Doug Knuth told the Reno Gazette-Journal on Monday his department ran a $2 million deficit in fiscal year 2017. That sits on top of the $3 million the department already owed to the university from debt accrued from 2008-13 when Cary Groth was the school’s athletic director.

The $2 million shortfall is the largest in one year in Wolf Pack history and the fourth time in the last eight fiscal years Nevada racked up an annual deficit of at least $450,000.
