A night after a close loss in the semifinals, Strother punched his ticket to the nationals.
Strother, from Nevada, beat Nick Mesa from Washington State by a first-round stoppage in the Western Regional college boxing tournament at the Eldorado Resort Casino in Reno.
On Friday night, Strother went out fast and dominated the first round, but then he got defensive and lost the decision.
