Regents OK Beard's deal, but not without consternation

The contract of new UNLV basketball coach Chris Beard, who would receive $5.75 million over five years if he completes his deal, was approved Friday by the Nevada Board of Regents.

However, the deal didn't sail through smoothly. Four Regents voted against the measure, including the three who represent Northern Nevada. The contract passed by a 9-4 vote.

"I’m not sure what the vote was but I think we won," Beard joked after the roughly two-hour meeting.

The four no votes were the most by the Regents for a Nevada coach. Wolf Pack football coach Brian Polian received three no votes when he was hired in January 2013.
