When Nevada baseball coach Jay Johnson left for Arizona last June, a slow trickle of players also departed the program.
Freshman All-American center fielder Cal Stevenson followed him out the door. High school All-American catcher Michael Blasko left. Stud pitcher JoJo Romero was gone. Jedd Fagg transferred. And those were just the guys on last year’s team. A handful of high-level signees – Ruben Cardenas (Fullerton), Kevin Ginkel (Arizona) and Jonah Davis (Cal), among others – were let out of their letters at Nevada and began their college careers at other school.
It was large-scale turnover and outfielder Cole Krzmarzick, a much ballyhooed 2014 signee who got limited playing time as a freshman in 2015, thought about joining that exodus of young talent leaving Nevada.
