As the final seconds dripped off the Mackay Stadium game clock Saturday night sealing Nevada’s 35-21 victory over Hawaii, a trio of Wolf Pack players giddily raced toward a pair of Gatorade coolers.
Defensive backs Ahki Muhammad, Vosean Crumbie and Brandon Brooks grabbed two 10-gallon buckets and weaved through the swarm of players on the field looking for their coach. As Jay Norvell was about to shake the hand of his opponent, Nick Rolovich, he was doused with water by his players.
That Gatorade bath came a few weeks later than he would have liked, but for the 54-year-old Norvell, who spent 31 seasons as an assistant, his first victory as a head coach is a win he will never forget.
