Garciaparra speaks at Dolan baseball dinner, calls cheating scandal "sad day" for baseball

The sign-stealing and cheating scandal in Major League Baseball has cast a shadow over the game, but Thursday was about celebrating baseball.

Nomar Garciaparra was the featured speaker at the 36th annual Bobby Dolan baseball dinner the annual fundraiser for Nevada baseball.

The six-time All-Star, and one of the top hitting shortstops of all-time, spoke with the media before the dinner. He and Nevada coach T.J. Bruce attended the same high school, Saint John Bosco in Bellflower, Calif.

Garciaparra, 46, said the sign-stealing scandal is sad and unfortunate, but added that it can be a learning experience.
