Ex-Pack player, prep coach Max Culp dies at 77

Former Wolf Pack football and baseball player Max Culp, who became a highly successful local high school coach, died last week at age 77.

A native Nevadan, Culp was born at St. Mary’s Hospital, the youngest of four children. He starred at Reno High before graduating in 1957 and heading to Coalinga (Calif.) Junior College. He was on Coalinga’s 1959 baseball team that won the state title and was induced into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2001.

Culp returned to Reno and played for the Wolf Pack football and baseball teams from 1960-62. He coached Nevada’s freshman football team for a season before teaching and coaching at Sparks High, where he met his future wife, Sandy Hay.
