I can’t remember where I recently read this, but the speaker in the article had mused about the mindset required to be an offensive lineman. Once recruited, there is seldom a fast track to starting. Most will spend 2-3 seasons hitting the weight room, getting bigger, learning the intricacies of the position and taking their beatings against higher units. Attrition at the position is high. Playing time is usually far from immediate.
While reading these and other unappealing facets of the position, I thought of the old 5-year state tagline, “Nebraska. Honestly, it’s not for everyone.”
While speaking with incumbent Nebraska Cornhuskers right guard Henry Lutovsky at Big 10 Football Media Days, I opined to him the same could be said about the life of a Division 1 offensive lineman and asked him to talk a bit about his journey rising up the ranks in that culture.
