Sports Briefing | Colleges: Monitor Praises Penn State’s Overhaul

Charles Scheeler, the man brought in to monitor Penn State’s athletics program after a scandal involving sexual abuse of children, said Monday that his role would soon end because he believed the university had made sufficient progress.

Scheeler said the 2012 agreement that Penn State made with the Big Ten Conference and the N.C.A.A. would conclude at the end of December instead of in 2017. He said Penn State’s reforms exceeded the terms of the agreement.

Penn State has bolstered compliance and ethics efforts; revised policies on reporting and oversight; and put in place new procedures for children on campus, security, and employee background checks.
