Father of Grizzlies' Hooper dies after cancer battle

Oakland senior guard Max Hooper's father Chip died from cancer Saturday, just one week after he made a surprise visit to watch his son play.

Chip Hooper attended the Golden Grizzlies' senior day Feb. 26. It was the first time since Max Hooper transferred to Oakland from St. John's after his sophomore year that his father was in attendance.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores helped arrange Chip Hooper's transportation from California to the game in Michigan. The elder Hooper watched his son while still strapped into a gurney.
