The NBA is on hiatus, but NBA free agency is right around the corner. The Dallas Mavericks have seven of their own players entering free agency that they will need to decide whether to re-sign or let walk. Tim Hardaway Jr. is the most notable of those players. Hardaway has proven himself as a true third option and has become one of the best three-point shooters in the league this season. Tim Hardaway Jr. was considered by many to just be a throw-in in the Kristaps Porzingis trade last season, but now that he has been put into the starting lineup by Rick Carlisle, he has proven to be a true asset for the Dallas Mavericks.
JJ Barea, one of the longest-tenured Dallas Mavericks of all time, is entering what could be his final summer as an NBA free agent. Barea has been a steady force off the bench since he was picked up by the Mavericks as an undrafted free agent. Barea has been pretty solid this year despite coming off of a torn achilles, but his minutes have fluctuated all year long. When Rick Carlisle needs a punch off the bench, he immediately inserts Barea into the lineup, but there are many games, and even stretches of games, in which JJ Barea does not play. Should the Mavs re-sign him for one more year or let him retire?
Willie Cauley-Stein was acquired by the Dallas Mavericks in the early half of the season after Dwight Powell tore his achilles, but he is eligible to become a free agent after just half of a season with the Mavs. Cauley-Stein has proven himself valuable in limited minutes on the court as a pick-&-roll option in Rick Carlisle’s offense and as a rim protector on the defensive end. If Cauley-Stein does opt out of his contract, he may not be re-signed by the Dallas Mavericks since the team already has a log-jam at that position. Dwight Powell, Boban Marjanovic, Kristaps Porzingis and Maxi Kleber are all under contract for next season.
Courtney Lee is one of the few veterans on this Dallas Maverick team, but he has gotten limited time this season. Before the all-star break, Lee barely played at all, but Carlisle has given him more responsibility since then after his impressive play on the defensive end. Courtney Lee, like Tim Hardaway Jr., was sent over in the Kristaps Porzingis trade as a salary dump, but in his second year with the Mavs, he has proven himself to be a valuable contributor at times. Lee’s time in Dallas may be up after this year, but he has earned himself at least one more veteran’s minimum contract somewhere before his playing days are over.
