After Philadelphia was granted a charter NBA franchise in 1946, the owners of the team decided to honor an old Philly basketball team, the Warriors, who were members of the old American Basketball League back in 1925.
The team became the San Francisco Warriors following their relocation to the S.F. Bay Area in 1962. It then changed its name to the Golden State Warriors, marketing the team as California's team (the Golden State) upon the team's move to its new home in Oakland back in 1971.
