Green, who spent 14 years as Navy defensive coordinator, retired during the offseason. Complications from neck surgery prevented Green from returning to the sideline last season and he decided in December to call it a career.
Having to take over the defense on the fly was not an easy situation for Pehrson, who could not make any major changes at that point.
