Niumatalolo feels Navy will be sound on special teams

Navy football spent considerable time practicing special teams situations last week.

Assistant coach Danny O'Rourke took the "hands team" to a separate field following Monday's practice and conducted a thorough review of how to handle an onside kick. Steve Johns put the punt coverage unit through its paces while the kickoff return team practicing its blocking schemes.

Head coach Ken Niumatalolo is a stickler for being sound on special teams and was not happy the Midshipmen did such a poor job covering kickoffs last season. Navy allowed touchdowns on the opening kickoff of two games with South Florida's Rodney Adams racing 97 yards and Pittsburgh's Quadree Henderson taking one back 100 yards.
