Navy women’s soccer met challenges head on, battled its way into NCAA tournament

The Navy women’s soccer team makes an appearance in the NCAA tournament this week following a conference championship season that almost didn’t happen at all.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the season was delayed from the usual fall dates to the spring, then suspended for nearly a month because of a Navy athletics pause.

When the academy on March 22 permitted varsity teams to resume play, Navy women’s soccer program was ready and raring to go. The Midshipmen resumed their season on March 27 and won four of its final five games.

Navy (4-4-2), which most recently won an overtime shootout with Colgate in the Patriot League tournament championship game to earn an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament, will face University of New Mexico Tuesday night at the Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson, North Carolina, in the first round.
