Navy football received the news everyone involved with the program was dreading on Monday: Starting quarterback Tago Smith has suffered a season-ending injury.
A magnetic resonance imagery examination revealed Smith sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Navy announced the news in a press release on Monday afternoon, which said Smith would undergo surgery this week.
Smith, a senior from Fayetteville, Georgia, will miss the remainder of the season while recuperating. Coach Ken Niumatalolo declined comment when asked whether Navy would seek a medical redshirt for the youngster.
"This is a tough day for Tago, his family and the Navy Brotherhood," Niumatalolo said in a statement to the Baltimore Sun Media Group.
