Navy football quarterback competition ‘wide-open’ with Perry Olsen opening camp as starter

Sophomore Perry Olsen enters preseason practice atop the depth chart at the quarterback position that is absolutely critical to Navy’s triple-option offense.

However, Olsen knows that means nothing at this point since he — like all the rest of the team’s signal-callers — is unproven. Navy opened August training camp Friday and Olsen took the first-team repetitions simply because he was the backup last season and appeared in eight games.

Olsen knows he must earn the starting job for the season opener against BYU through performance over the next month. Offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper termed the quarterback competition “wide-open” during a Zoom press conference this week.
