Navy football 2020 review: Strong finish, 9 returning starters provides encouraging outlook for defense

Navy defensive coordinator Brian Newberry used the word disappointed about a dozen times during his weekly online news conference held Nov. 4.

Newberry’s unit had just been torched to the tune of 555 yards and 51 points in a lopsided loss at SMU. It marked a major setback for the Navy defense, which had shown improvement over the previous three games following a rough start to the season.

Newberry could have added he was disappointed to see the defense seemingly regress in his second season as coordinator. He oversaw a complete transformation of the unit in 2019, when the Midshipmen made massive improvement.
