Linebacker Powell had things covered for Mids

Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo arrived at his office on Tuesday morning and found a forlorn-looking Josiah Powell waiting outside his door.

The ninth-year head coach was worried the senior linebacker had done something wrong and was happy to learn he had not.

Powell simply wanted to tell Niumatalolo that he wanted to change jersey numbers from 48 to 58 in order to honor fallen captain Daniel Gonzales, who had suffered a Lisfranc injury in the loss to Air Force.

"I chose to switch to No. 58 as a tribute to my brother. It really hurt me and the rest of the team to see him out for the season," Powell said.
