It was fitting that Wednesday night’s Navy-American wrestling match came down to the final bout and put the home team’s most accomplished senior on the spot.
The Midshipmen trailed the visiting Eagles by three points when Nicholas Gil took the mat to close out Senior Night.
Gil dug deep to defeat Jack Mutchnik in a technical battle at 141 pounds, earning a decision that tied the team score at 18. There are no ties in wrestling and American was declared the winner by virtue of the first criteria of winning six of 10 matches.
Following a scoreless first period, Mutchnik registered an escape to start the second stanza and Gil followed suit to open the third.
