Navy's football program was jolted on Friday by news that a player's father had been murdered.
Patrick Carothers, a U.S. Marshall, was shot and killed while trying to serve a warrant in southeast Georgia. He is the father of Navy linebacker Paul Carothers, a freshman from Flowery Branch, Georgia.
The elder Carothers, deputy commander of the Southeast Regional Task Force, died after being shot twice while leading his team of officers into a mobile home in rural Long County. A brief shootout ensued and the suspect the team of officers was attempting to apprehend was also killed.
