DeLane Fitzgerald was hired as the 13th head coach in the 56-year history of of Frostburg State football in January, 2014. Fitzgerald had previously served as head coach at Southern Virginia University and brought several of his assistants from there to the Division III school in western Maryland.
One of those assistants that followed Fitzgerald to Frostburg was offensive coordinator Tye Hiatt. Upon settling into the new job and putting together their first recruiting class, Fitzgerald and Hiatt realized there was a major missing element to formulating an effective offense.
