Count me among those that raised an eyebrow when head coach Ken Niumatalolo declared that he wanted Navy to be more aggressive on defense.
I had visions of the Midshipmen blitzing left and right while leaving cornerbacks in one-on-one coverage. That seemed like a recipe for disaster, particularly against all the high-powered spread passing attacks in the American Athletic Conference.
However, that wasn't exactly what Niumatalolo was advocating. Rather, it was more of a philosophical change that Navy needed to take on an attack mentality as opposed to sitting back in read and react mode.
Niumatalolo's thinking on this front was summed up best by the following comment he made to the team after a preseason practice.
